Hi, my name is Gregg Risner and this is my family. My wife Freddie (she also works in our office) and our 3 children Maxime (8), Haleigh (5) and Austin (3).
Let me tell you my story of how I became a Chiropractor.
When I was fifteen years old I lived in Longview, TX and was dreaming of becoming a meteorologist. One Saturday morning I was jumping on the trampoline in our backyard and was doing beautiful flips. I was on a roll! I decided to try a double front flip, I almost made it. Almost.. I landed on the top of my head, my body followed forcing my forehead to hit my chest. I laid there for a while, in shock. My mom and dad came running and lifted me off the trampoline. They immediately called the ambulance and I was taken to the ER.
At the hospital they took X-rays of my back and neck to see what the extent of the damage was but after reviewing the X-rays they told me everything looked okay. My parents and I were relieved, I was okay! They gave me some medication for the pain and I was allowed to go home.
Days after the accident I was still in a lot of pain, at school I sat in the back row so I could lean my head against the wall for support. My mom was going to a Chiropractor at the time for migraines and she suggested I'd go with her one time so her Chiropractor could check me. So armed with my X-rays we went to the Chiropractor. He listened to what happened and then asked to see the X-rays. He took one good look at them and then said "these X-rays were taken while you were laying down, we need to make new X-rays while you are standing up so we can see the effect of gravity on your spine". He proceeded to take new X-rays while I was standing up, then we went to his doctor's office so we could take a look at them. He was silent for a couple of seconds then he turned and looked at me. The following words changed my life forever. "You have a broken neck". I was stunned. He proceeded to explain, the medical term was "bilateral facet dislocation". 1 disc was completely torn and 2 other discs were badly damaged. Generally people who suffer a bilateral facet dislocation end up quadriplegic (paralyzed from the neck down). Basically the only thing keeping my head on my shoulders were the muscles in my neck and back. I was immediately admitted to the hospital. The doctors at the ER took out the X-rays (the ones which were initially taken at the hospital), looked at them and turned to me. "Why are you here?" My mom said: "there are more X-rays". They took out the X-rays which were taken by the Chiropractor, took a look at them. I was operated on that evening. They fused 3 vertebrae in my neck, I spent several days in a striker bed after which I had a halo on my head/neck for 3 months.
